52nd UPOV technical Working Party for Vegetables in China
The 52nd session of the UPOV Technical Working Party for Vegetables took place in September in Beijing, China.

Experts from 17 countries and 3 organisations, Crop Life, ISF (International Seed Federation) en ESA (European Seed Association) attended the meeting. It is worthwhile mentioning that Australia, Canada and Saoedi Arabia were represented this year.

The TWV discussed, among other, the proposals for revision of technical guidelines for the examination for Plant Breeders’ Rights. A part of those will be forwarded to the UPOV Technical Committee for approval. This concerns lettuce, spinach, pea, fennel, spinach beet, watercress and watermelon. The TWV agreed also with the proposal to add alternative DNA marker tests for the bio assays for resistances to ToMV and TSWV. They are included in the technical guidelines for tomato and tomato rootstocks.

A trend may be noticed that in the TWV resistance characteristics will be more often the subject of revisions in technical guidelines. This year this was the case in lettuce, spinach, pea, tomato and tomato rootstocks. ISF as well gave a presentation about its working group on Disease Resistance Terminology. On the agenda of next year are resistance characteristics in lettuce, spinach, tomato and tomato rootstocks, melon , pepper and squash.

A presentation of a Chinese expert showed that the number of applications for PBR is increasing rapidly in China. In 2017 3842 applications were received. The fact that China has stopped charging fees since April 2017 could be one of the causes.

The excursion went to the Institute of Vegetables and Flowers (IVF) of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences. The TWV visited breeding trials of white cabbage, cucumber and resistance test facilities.
